At the invitation of the School of Finance of Capital University of Economics and Business, our associate researcher Chen Hao delivered a thesis report on "Will Urban Exports Reduce the "Immigration Income Premium"" on May 22. Dozens of teachers and students from the School of Finance of Capital University of Economics and Business attended the lecture.
"Immigration income premium" is a phenomenon in which the income of the labor force from outside the city is higher than that of the local labor force. Whether the increase in the level of urban opening to the outside world is conducive to reducing the income premium of immigrants has always been the focus of the academic circle and the government. This paper examines the changes in the labor income gap between the foreign household registration and the local household registration within the city from the perspective of export trade. The regression results using the two sets of instrumental variables of the official foreign students' birthplace in the late Qing Dynasty and the trade port cities opened in the late Qing Dynasty show that the growth of urban exports significantly reduces the income premium of immigrants, and that urban exports narrow the income gap between foreign household registration and local household registration labor income. The role and spillover effect are realized. Further research proves that the role of exports does not change due to the length of time the local registered labor obtains the registered permanent residence, that is, the opening of cities to the outside world can increase the income level of all local registered labor, thereby reducing the income premium of immigrants. The thesis research shows that insisting on opening to the outside world is conducive to achieving income equality between labors in different hukou locations within cities. Therefore, local labor should support the opening of cities to the outside world so that they can fully enjoy the spillover benefits brought by exports to local labor income.
After the lecture, Mr. Chen Hao and the teachers and classmates who listened to the lecture conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions, and achieved good results.
